A man travelled the world for four years and built a single imaginary country. Then the film disappeared for almost twenty years.

A hospital in Los Angeles. We know it is the 1920s from the costumes. A young stuntman whose legs no longer work begins telling a story to a little girl with a broken arm: five warriors, a desert, revenge. But he is not telling it to entertain her. He wants something from her, and he bends the story towards that want.

The Fall'un asıl meselesi burada.

That is where The Fall really lives. The extraordinary world we see — red furs, blue sands, rising staircases — is the inside of the girl's head. He narrates; she fills it with the faces and colours she knows. Which is why the story keeps shifting as it goes: a character turns up looking like someone else, a scene twists without logic. The child is building what she hears incorrectly, and the film refuses to correct her.

Tarsem paid for this himself. He poured years of earnings from commercials and music videos into it and spread the shoot across the world. Nothing in the frame was made on a computer — those fortresses, deserts and staircases are all actually there. The sentence sounds strange now, because films are no longer made this way.

Eiko Ishioka designed the costumes. In her hands fabric never stays in the background; it becomes the character. Each of the five warriors is defined by what he wears. Without her work this would genuinely be another film — the girl's imagined world could only convince by being this excessive.

And the girl. Catinca Untaru was a child at the time, had never acted, and made up her own lines. The hesitations, the mispronunciations, the sudden changes of subject were not written — they simply happened. That is the film's strongest ground: the adult's deception and the child's truth sitting in the same frame.

The Fall vizyona girdiğinde kimse ne yapacağını bilemedi.

When The Fall was released nobody knew what to do with it. It played in few cinemas and then vanished. For years those who wanted to see it hunted for a copy and came back empty-handed. A film disappearing was supposed to be a thing of the past; this one proved otherwise. Then it returned — restored, screened again, and for the first time properly seen.

This issue is about the break: something happening quietly and being noticed only afterwards. In The Fall the break comes at the very beginning. The man says his first sentence and the child believes him. Everything after that is about what that trust will be used for.

The narrator of The Fall is a stuntman in a hospital bed, and the tale he tells is built inside the listening child's head. Who decides how that tale looks is the costume designer as much as the director. Every figure in the film — the masked bandit, the despot in red, the blue-faced warrior — was a drawing first.

Eiko Ishioka treated costume as work that does not begin with cloth. She would first decide what a figure is, then draw it like a graphic; colour, silhouette and material follow from that drawing. Her background in advertising and poster design explains it: her costumes read from a distance and are recognisable in a single frame.

The video below looks at how she worked. Watch for this: the costume does not decorate the body, it changes what the body is. Wearing it, the performer stands differently and walks differently; part of the acting comes out of the fabric itself.

The Fall'u izleyenlerin çoğu bir noktada aynı şeyi düşünüyor: bu nerede çekildi?

Most people who watch The Fall think the same thing at some point: where was this shot?

Tarsem'in kendi sayımına göre film yirmi sekiz ülkede çekildi; çektiği yerleri tek bir hayali coğrafyada birleştirdi. Filmdeki ülke yok. Ama içindeki her yer var.

The answer is not one place. By Tarsem's own count the film was shot in twenty-eight countries, and he joined what he found into a single imaginary geography. The country in the film does not exist. Every place inside it does.

Bilgisayar efekti kullanmadı; her şey gerçekti. Yirmi yıl sonra film hiç eskimemiş görünüyor.

He used no digital effects; everything was real. Twenty years on the film does not look dated at all.

No usó efectos digitales; todo era real. Veinte años después la película no parece anticuada.

The floor of a dried lake, with dead trees that have stood for more than six hundred years. The sand is orange, the trees black, the sky blue, and none of it was graded. This is the scene most often mistaken for digital work.

Perhaps this is why the film stays with people. Tarsem did not invent a fantastic world. He found real places and joined them as though they were parts of one.
