In Hollywood, a director who rejected a film's final version could take his name off the credits, but the spot couldn't stay empty. There was an invented name for that: Alan Smithee. It appears on dozens of films, and there is no such person behind any of them. When Lynch disowned the television version of Dune, that name took the director's chair, and another invented name went on the screenplay. Over time everyone learned what the name meant, and the pseudonym began announcing exactly what it was meant to hide. The system was eventually dropped.

Para eso existía un nombre inventado: Alan Smithee. Aparece en decenas de películas y detrás de ninguna hay una persona con ese nombre. Cuando Lynch repudió la versión televisiva de Dune, ese nombre ocupó la silla del director, y en el guion se puso otro nombre inventado.
