Neorealism found its actors in the street. The man who played the father in Bicycle Thieves really was a factory worker. After the film came out he lost his job; work was scarce, and on top of that people assumed he was rich now. He worked as a bricklayer, picked up the odd extra part, and died poor. These films draw their strength from real faces. What became of those faces afterwards is rarely told.
El neorrealismo encontró a sus actores en la calle. El hombre que interpretaba al padre en Ladri di biciclette era de verdad obrero de una fábrica. Tras el estreno perdió el empleo: había poco trabajo y, además, se daba por hecho que ahora era rico. Trabajó de albañil, consiguió algún papel de extra y murió pobre. La fuerza de estas películas viene de los rostros reales. Lo que fue de esos rostros después casi nunca se cuenta.
