Kiarostami read a short news item in a magazine: a man had passed himself off as a famous director, taken in a family, and been caught. Kiarostami found him in prison, talked to him, and then made the film. The con man played himself, the deceived family played themselves, and the director he had impersonated appeared in the film as himself. At some point it becomes hard to tell what was staged and what was recorded. A few years later, at the end of Taste of Cherry, the camera turned toward his own crew.
Kiarostami leyó una breve noticia en una revista: un hombre se había hecho pasar por un director famoso, había engañado a una familia y lo habían detenido. Kiarostami lo encontró en la cárcel, habló con él y después hizo la película.
