Guzmán was filming Chile when the coup arrived in the middle of the shoot. The bombing of the palace is in the film; one of the crew's cameramen later disappeared and was never found. Rossellini shot Rome in a ruined, newly liberated city while the war was still going on in the north. Chaplin started on his dictator film days after the war broke out. He saved the final speech for last and rewrote it as news came in from Europe; by the time that scene's turn came, France was under invasion.
