Bergman told the story of a marriage coming apart. Thirty years later he called back the same two actors, as the same two characters. Marianne goes to the house of the ex-husband she hasn't seen in years. The characters have aged, the actors have aged, and so has Bergman. Beneath everything they say to each other lies what they did to one another in the first film.
