Dostoevsky's The Idiot was filmed in France, in Japan and in the Soviet Union. Kurosawa moved the novel to snowbound Hokkaido, and the prince became a soldier back from the war. The Soviet adaptation stayed on the book's own soil and told only the novel's first part. Put the three films side by side and you see the same book read from three different countries.
