Finishing a film and then, years later, making the same one again is a strange thing to do. The director is someone else by then, telling the same story from a different age, often from a different country. Ozu remade one of his silent films in colour a quarter of a century later. Hitchcock carried a story he had shot in England over to Hollywood. Haneke remade Funny Games in America almost shot for shot; the audience his first film was taking on lived there.
