Ozu's world is the inside of a house, and that house is always built to the same measures. The camera sits at the eye level of someone on a floor cushion, it does not move, and the characters speak straight into the lens. These rules do not make the viewer a guest but a member of the family.
El mundo de Ozu es el interior de una casa, y esa casa se construye siempre con las mismas medidas. La cámara está a la altura de los ojos de alguien sentado en un cojín, no se mueve, y los personajes hablan directamente al objetivo. Estas reglas no convierten al espectador en invitado sino en alguien de la familia.
Sahneler arasında boş mekânlar durur: bir koridor, bir çamaşır ipi, geçen bir tren. Bu aralar anlatıyı bölmez, ona nefes verir. Ozu'nun sinemasında asıl olay bu boşluklarda geçer — biri gittikten sonra odanın hâli, sofranın toplanması, bir kadının gülümseyip susması.
Between the scenes stand empty spaces: a corridor, a washing line, a passing train. These intervals do not interrupt the narration but let it breathe. In Ozu's cinema the real event happens in those gaps — the state of a room after someone leaves, a table being cleared, a woman smiling and then falling silent.
Entre las escenas hay espacios vacíos: un pasillo, un tendedero, un tren que pasa. Esos intervalos no interrumpen el relato: lo dejan respirar. En el cine de Ozu el verdadero suceso ocurre en esos huecos: cómo queda una habitación cuando alguien se va, una mesa que se recoge, una mujer que sonríe y calla.
