Ceylan ilk filmlerinde oyuncu aramaya gitmedi, evine baktı. Annesi ve babası Kasaba'da da Mayıs Sıkıntısı'nda da var. Babası ikinci filmde, ağaçlık arazisini devlete kaptırmamaya uğraşan yaşlı bir adamı oynuyor. O sahnelerdeki yorgunluğu kimse yönetmemiş gibi duruyor. In his early films Ceylan didn't go looking for actors; he looked at home. His mother and father are in both The Small Town and Clouds of May. In the second film his father plays an old man trying to keep his wooded land from being taken by the state. The weariness in those scenes looks as if nobody directed it. People who don't know how to act in front of a camera are sitting in their own house, and that's all.
En sus primeras películas Ceylan no salió a buscar actores: miró en casa. Su madre y su padre aparecen tanto en Kasaba como en Clouds of May. En la segunda, su padre interpreta a un anciano que intenta que el Estado no le quite su terreno arbolado. El cansancio de esas escenas parece que nadie lo dirigió. Gente que no sabe actuar ante una cámara está sentada en su propia casa, y nada más.
