Ceylan's cinema knows how to wait. His camera locks onto a landscape and does not easily leave it; snow falls, wind blows, two people sit silent in a car — and inside that silence we hear everything that goes unsaid. In his films the story is carried not by plot but by a person's reckoning with himself. A glance, a sentence left half-finished, a face turned away; Ceylan's real subject is always hidden somewhere between these.
He began as a photographer, and that eye never left him. In his films the Anatolian steppe is not merely a place but a state of mind — prison and freedom at once, loneliness and shelter. He takes the quiet collapse of Chekhov's stories, Tarkovsky's carving of time, Bergman's closeness to the face, and rebuilds them in the light of Anatolia. The result is a cinema that resembles nowhere else on earth and is understood everywhere: as local as it is universal, as slow as it is hypnotic.
