Hou's world is the outside heard from inside a house. History in his work is not an event but a distant sound: a radio, the street, a conversation in another room. The large events do not enter the frame; their effects do.

The camera stands at a distance and does not cut. A family meal, a quarrel, a farewell; each unfolds in a single take and in its real duration. That distance is not coldness but respect: the film refuses to enter the event and steer it.
