He was born out of the bursting freedom of post-Franco Spain, out of Madrid's nightlife, out of the courage of queer culture. He tells of sexual identity, of family, of desire without a trace of shame — as a celebration instead. He took melodrama from Hitchcock, colour from Spanish painting, and the love of storytelling from his own mother. On the surface he is as exuberant as a telenovela; underneath, as sorrowful as an elegy. Watching him is like learning not to be ashamed of what you feel.
